A concussion is an acute neurophysiological event related to blunt impact to the head, neck or body, which we diagnose, assess and treat. This injury can cause brain damage, impacting your physical and mental health, as well as cognitive capacity. Our team will examine vascular and neurological structures that may require immediate medical attention and can provide cognitive rehabilitation therapy to improve your functional abilities.
Our approach to concussion management involves three phases:
1) Acute Symptomatic Phase: this includes the time from your injury, through your maximum symptoms, to the beginning when symptoms resolve. During this phase, we will monitor your symptoms for any ‘red flags’, should you require immediate medical care.
2) Recovery Phase: during this phase, your symptoms are starting to alleviate, your cognitive capacity improves, and you can slowly return to your preinjury state. You may notice more symptoms with more thinking and physical activity, which should be carefully encouraged.
3) Recovered Phase: the final phase is when your symptoms have completely, or mostly, been recovered and you can return to your normal pre-injury functioning. During this phase, we may continue to provide cognitive rehabilitation treatments, as necessary.
